Kateryna Chorna, LCSWA

Kateryna (Katya) Chorna,
Mental Health Therapist

My name is Katya, and I am a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Certified Trauma and Resilience Practitioner (CTRP), DBT certified and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSWA).

Prior to getting my master’s degree, I worked with over a thousand tennis students of different ages, cultures, countries and social statuses. I am experienced in dealing with people; especially children and teenagers. I can greatly benefit your life with my strength, optimism, knowledge, education and leadership skills. I am trained to help people discover and build upon their own resources and strengths as well as the resources and strengths of their environment to meet the challenges of poverty, discrimination, health and mental health issues, and other difficult life situations.

I am originally from Ukraine and I came to the United States on a tennis scholarship. I received my Master of Social Work at University of North Carolina Wilmington, which is one of only 13 MSW programs in the U.S. that concentrates only on clinical social work. The school prepared me to make a difference in the world through direct practice with individuals, couples, families and communities.

I practice:

  • Solution Focused and Solution Oriented Therapy
  • Structural Family Therapy
  • Transgenerational Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • Social Construction therapy
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Feedback Informed Treatment.
  • Interviewing PolyVagal Theory into modalities listed above

My previous experiences:

  • I worked with international clients as a Basic Consultant of Positive Psychotherapy at the World Association for Positive Psychotherapy (WAPP) and have a wide knowledge of different cultures and experiences that benefit my abilities as a day treatment therapist.
  • At a Drug and Alcohol Intensive Outpatient Program during internship and practicum that created a desire to continue working with others.
  • I worked with 13–18-year-old adolescents and their families doing group, individual and family therapy at the Day Treatment center as a Mental Health Therapist.

The skills I have as Certified Trauma and Resilience Practitioners-Clinical:

  • Trauma-informed and resilience-focused mindset.
  • The effects of toxic stress and trauma, how to help process those experiences, and foster and nurture characteristics of resilience.
  •  The experience of trauma impacts a person’s body and brain, and how to use sensory-based interventions.
  • The effects of addiction on the individual and family and how to heal the trauma of addiction.
  • How to help individuals regulate their emotions to sustain recovery.
  • Though Mind Body Skills for Emotional Regulation,we understand behavior as a language for what is happening in the body.
  • We teach how to understand the power of mind/body awareness in supporting children and adolescents with self-regulating and creating strong internal and external resources.
  • We utilize the Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents model and practice sensory-based interventions from a variety of SITCAP® model programs, including Healing the Experience of Trauma: A Path to Resilience
  • In addition, we can reduce the stigma of mental health, bridging the gaps between treatment and need and focusing on fostering and nurturing characteristics of resilience in children and adolescents.
